Reasons to Break Free from A Scarcity Mindset Today

Understand what a scarcity mindset is, how to recognise if you have one, and ideas on how to break free from a scarcity mindset and embrace an abundance mindset.

Dear Spirited Earthling,

In many ways, the world is what you make it and how you view and interact with it dictates how happy you will be, the risks you take, and how much love you let in. One of the most limiting mindsets to hold is the scarcity mindset because you perceive the world to be lacking, with minimal opportunities, and scarce resources. This post shares the concept of a scarcity mindset, offers how to recognize if you have one, and suggests practical strategies for shifting to a more inspiring abundance mindset.

What is a Scarcity Mindset?

A scarcity mindset is a belief rooted in the idea that there's not enough to go around. Individuals with a scarcity mindset view life through the lens of lack and limitations. They feel life is a competition and constantly feel they are missing out, there are inadequate resources for everyone and consequently fear that there isn’t enough for them (especially when people around them are succeeding and taking the last few seats at the table).

Recognising a Scarcity Mindset

In order to shift your mindset away from a scarcity mindset you have to first know the signs of one. Here are questions to ask yourself to recognise common signs that you might have a scarcity mindset:

  • Constant Worry: Do you often worry about running out of resources, time, or opportunities?

  • Fear of Missing Out: Are you anxious about missing out on experiences, opportunities, or relationships?

  • Competitiveness: Do you view life as a zero-sum game, believing that someone else's gain is your loss?

  • Constant Comparison: Do you regularly compare yourself with other people? So much so that you can negatively spiral. Are you prone to jealousy?

  • Hesitancy to Share: Are you reluctant to share knowledge, resources, or experiences with others for fear they will progress and succeed, and you will not?

  • Hoarding: Do you tend to hoard belongings, resources, or information, even when it's unnecessary?

“The first step towards discarding a scarcity mentality involves giving thanks for everything that you have.” ~ Wayne Dyer

How to Break Free from a Scarcity Mindset

Breaking free from a scarcity mindset and shifting to an abundance mindset can be a liberating transformation that opens your mind and heart to the joys of life. Here are strategies to help you make this shift:

Cultivate Self-Awareness

Getting to know yourself better helps you understand your actions and motivations. Therefore, becoming more self-aware can help you recognise that you are thinking in scarcity-based thought patterns and identify root causes. When you know why something is, you are better able to counteract it.

Challenge Scarcity-based Thought Patterns

By being self-aware and recognising scarcity-based thought patterns, you can actively challenge your thoughts. When you think “There is not enough for me too”, ask yourself how true this thought is, and think about solutions and ways of navigating this challenge.

Rephrase Your Words

Part of challenging scarcity-based thought patterns is reframing thoughts and rephrasing your words to more abundance-oriented ones. The words you use and tell yourself are powerful. Replace thoughts like:

  • Scarcity Mindset: “I can't afford this” with

    • Abundance Mindset: “I choose to save my money. I choose to spend money on different priorities.”

  • Scarcity Mindset: “I will never find love” with

    • Abundance Mindset: “I am enjoying time alone so I can be the best partner when the time comes.”

  • Scarcity Mindset: "There's never enough to go around" with

    • Abundance Mindset: "There's an abundance of opportunities, resources, and possibilities available to me."

  • Scarcity Mindset: "I must compete with others to succeed" with

    • Abundance Mindset: "I can collaborate and create win-win situations with others to achieve mutual success."

  • Scarcity Mindset: "I need to hoard what I have" with

    • Abundance Mindset: "By sharing and giving, I create more abundance for myself and others."

Practice Gratitude

Having a gratitude practice is essential to break free from a scarcity mindset and strengthen an abundance mindset. As you continually focus on what you have and appreciate it, you begin to notice how lucky you are to have what you do. You will also be thankful for all the blessings that enter your life thereafter.

Share and Collaborate

By choosing to share knowledge and skills in collaborations, you open yourself to new experiences. Sharing and collaborating can increase the amount of available resources and opportunities, encouraging an abundance mindset.

Celebrate Others Success

Celebrating the success of others can challenge the limiting belief that their success takes away success from you. As you celebrate others, others will celebrate you.

Avoid Comparison

Remind yourself that everyone’s journey is different and unique. Practising self-awareness, gratitude, and celebrating others can help take your focus off comparison and onto yourself and your life. Rather spend time investing in yourself and being present in your life.

Goal Set and Plan

Setting goals with actionable steps to follow gets you started and keeps you going to make dreams a reality. By acknowledging each milestone you reach and realising how far you’ve come and what you have gained, you can alleviate scarcity-based worries. Taking small steps towards your goals is better than waiting for perfection or instant gratification.

“The key to abundance is meeting limited circumstances with unlimited thoughts.” ~ Marianne Willamson

Simply said, a scarcity mindset can hold you back from reaching your full potential and enjoying life to the fullest. By recognising the signs, taking action, and shifting to an abundance mindset you can overcome scarcity and thrive in abundance. The power to shape your mindset lies within you.
