New Moon Ritual Guide with Journal Prompts and Prayer

Your new moon ritual guide with journal prompts and prayer to harness the power of the start of the lunar cycle.

Dear Spirited Earthling,

Each new moon is a new beginning. It is the start of a lunar cycle. The new moon is the darkest moon, and this lack of moonlight asks you to go within and have moments of self-reflection. Like how the seasons call for different actions from you, the moon cycles do the same.

“People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.” ~ Paulo Coelho

New Moon Energy

During each new moon, the sun and moon are aligned, binding the masculine and feminine energies. This energy combination promotes positive change – the courage to heal and go for goals.

The new moon is your confidant. She is who you can share your hopes and dreams with. Write and speak your intention to her and welcome the miracles she can help you create. Take some time to go within yourself and speak to your soul – what do you want to accomplish in this moon cycle?

To make space for something new, you must let go of things not serving your highest good. A new moon is a time for clearing and cleansing – letting go of fears, doubts, insecurities, behaviours, and relationships. The darkness of the new moon provides the energy to heal.

Your new moon ritual can be practised on the days leading up to, the day of, and the days following the new moon.

New Moon Journal Prompts

Journaling can be a sacred practice, in all seasons and cycles of life. Having a journal at your spiritual altar can help you connect with yourself through this practice daily. You can have a moon journal that you write in each new and full moon, or you can use your usual daily journal. These journal prompts for the new moon can help you identify what you want to do and who you want to become.

  • What makes me happy?

  • What do I want more of / less of?

  • What is my soul longing for?

  • What am I desiring more than anything lately?

  • What do I want to manifest on this new moon?

  • What do I need to let go of – intentions, feelings, thoughts?

  • What kind of person do I want to be in this new moon cycle?

  • What energy do I want to express in this new moon cycle?

Write without fear and without judgement - this is a love letter to yourself and your new moon confidant. List all the things that are making you happy, and what your soul may be longing for. Write down all you plan to manifest and fully describe the person you want to become. Look at your lists and highlight what you want to focus on.

“Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.” ~ Paulo Coelho

  • What can I do to make these dreams and desires a reality?

Think about actionable steps that you can take to work with the Universe in creating your dream life. See a clear path, or a clear beginning of the path, to your goals and give yourself the chance to support and reach them. Ask for support and guidance from your higher powers and have faith that they are conspiring in helping you

“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” ~ Paulo Coelho

New Moon Ritual and Prayer

From your intentions, choose one of them to manifest with the new moon magic. As you sit in your sacred space and open your circle, take 3 deep breaths. Welcome the energies of the elements and Universe, and ask for their blessings and support in manifesting your intention (read more about opening and closing sacred space circles in our spiritual altar guide).

Say this new moon prayer:

new moon prayer by spirited earthling jordan schroeder

Write down your intention on a piece of paper and feel guided in expressing your intention as it flows through your hand. If you feel compelled to draw your intention or parts of it, do so. When words supporting your intention come to you, write them too.

Look at your paper and read what is written. Take 3 deep breaths.

Write down how you would feel when this intention manifests into reality. Write down how your life would look when your dream is your reality.

This is your letter to the moon, Universe, angels and guides from your soul. Look at the paper and how you wrote your life and feelings to be. Take 3 deep breaths and close your eyes, envisioning what you wrote down. Feel the hope and courage that fills your body.

You can then close your sacred space and new moon ritual by thanking the elements, energies, and moon for their presence, blessings, and support.

This new moon ritual can be where you start, and somewhere to grow on. Your ritual can be changed to suit your personal preferences, beliefs, and intentions. Spirituality and prayer are personal expressions of personal journeys.
