Strong Human Connection to the 4 Elements
Exploring our strong human connection to the 4 elements, from our history of physically living in unison with the elements to attributing common traits to people of the same zodiac sign.
Dear Spirited Earthling,
Throughout human history, we have had a strong connection to the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. These elements are not just physical entities but also have symbolic and cultural significance. While many of us have less of a connection with the four elements in recent times, there are simple ways we can stay connected to them in our everyday lives.
History of Human Connection to the 4 Elements in Nature
Overall, the four elements have played a significant role in shaping human culture and the way we interact with the world around us.
Living with the Elements
Connecting with the four elements is something our ancestors did daily. Our ancestors were outside and in the fresh air for most of their day. The smells could be carried on the wind, signalling you are close to home or when you need to get moving. Water was, is and always will be essential to life. Migrating with the water sources and staying close to perennial rivers meant survival. The Earth supports all nutritional needs. Natural caves provided shelter and wood, mud, and grass were formed into homes. There was community found around the fire. There was warmth, connection, and protection.
Forgetting the Elements
Through modernisation, humans cut themselves off from nature in a myriad of ways. Spending time outside in the fresh air became a low priority to many. In many parts of the world, water is easily accessible from a tap in your house. There is no need to know which rivers are perennial or the need to be physically near water sources. Fewer and fewer people work with the earth and grow their own food. Food is mostly cooked with electricity, removing our connection to fire. Families and the community would eat around the fire, but today many families don’t sit at the same table for meals - lessening deep connections to each other.
Identifying Humanness in the 4 Elements
The human connection to the 4 elements surpasses the physical. Each astrological or zodiac sign is linked to an element. There are common traits in people of the same element, even though their zodiac signs are different. The spread of the Feng Shui tradition from China to the rest of the world made people more aware of the elemental balance in their environments. Find easy ways to connect with the elements at home.
Air: Aquarius, Gemini, Libra
Air symbolises intellect and connection to the universe. It is the element of the mind. The air element is linked to the heart chakra.
Air represents freedom, movement, and communication. We need air to survive, and it is also the medium through which we exchange ideas and connect with others. In many cultures, air is associated with the spiritual realm, as it is invisible yet vital to life.
Therefore, people with air signs are seen to be communicative and imaginative. There is an interest in different ideas and gaining knowledge. However, although their imagination is a strength, they may be detached from reality and have their head in the clouds, leading them to be flaky.
To encourage air energy around you, spend time outside. During meditation, think about opening your heart chakra and repeat affirmations for this chakra. The sound of wind charms can connect to the air as well.
In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Uncle Iroh describes the people of the Air Nation as:
“Air is the element of freedom. The Air Nomads detached themselves from worldly concerns, and they found peace and freedom. And they apparently had a great sense of humor.”
Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Water symbolises intuition and emotions. It is the element of emotions. The water element is linked to the sacral chakra.
Water is the element of life, representing fluidity, emotion, and intuition. It is essential for our survival and has been used for transportation, irrigation, and hygiene. Water is also associated with the feminine, as it is often seen as nurturing and healing.
As such, people with water signs are known to be healing and trusting. Water signs are caring, resourceful, and creative. Because they are deeply connected to their emotions, they can have mood swings and are prone to melancholy.
To stimulate water energy around you, drink more water and take a swim or have a bath. During meditation, think about opening your sacral chakra and repeat affirmations for this chakra. Keeping a vessel of water, the colour blue, and ocean-related things (shells, coral) near you (and on your spiritual altar) can increase water energy.
In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Uncle Iroh describes the people of the Water Nation as:
“Water is the element of change. The people of the Water Tribes are capable of adapting to many things. They have a sense of community and love that holds them together through anything.”
Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Earth symbolises grounding (foundation of life and family roots) and connection to the life path. It is the element of balance. The earth element is linked to the root chakra.
Earth symbolises stability, grounding, and the foundation of life. People have always felt connected to the earth, through agriculture, construction, and even burial practices. Many cultures also associate the earth with the feminine, as it is the source of life and fertility.
Therefore, people with earth signs are believed to be logical and hard-working. Earth signs are practical and can be cautious. Due to their deep connection to the earth, they can be materialistic and stubborn like a rock.
To increase earth energy around you, spend time in nature. During meditation, think about opening your root chakra and repeat affirmations for this chakra. Having plants around you boosts the earth's energy around you. Walk in and tend to the garden.
In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Uncle Iroh describes the people of the Earth Nation as:
“Earth is the element of substance. The people of the Earth Kingdom are diverse and strong. They are persistent and enduring.”
Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Fire symbolises inner strength (personal power) and energy that can be a tool for transformation. It is the element of will. The fire element is linked to the solar plexus chakra.
Fire is a powerful and transformative element, representing passion, energy, and vitality. It has been used for cooking, warmth, and light, and also has spiritual significance in many cultures. Fire is often associated with the masculine, and is seen as a symbol of strength and power.
As such, people with fire signs are strong and passionate. Fire signs are courageous and outgoing. These risk-takers can be jealous and angered easily.
To increase fire energy around you, spend time in nature. During meditation, think about opening your solar plexus chakra and repeat affirmations for this chakra. Fire energy can be stimulated through burning candles, incense and herbs. Embrace your courage and passion by having an adventure. Exercise creates heat in the body, connecting you to fire.
In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Uncle Iroh describes the people of the Fire Nation as:
“Fire is the element of power. The people of the Fire Nation have desire and will, and the energy and drive to achieve what they want.”
